Inspiring images can help us dream of a better life, a happier place, and give us an escape from the drudgery of our day-to-day lives. Just a few months before I moved to Phuket, I found a photograph of a gorgeous white-sand beach with palm trees on the travel website Phuket.com and set it as my wallpaper image on my computer at work.
Seeing that photo every day helped me imagine the day I would shed my winter clothes, arrive at that Phuket beach, and dip my toes into the clear blue sea.
After living here for many years, of course I know some of the not-so-pretty realities about life in Phuket, but I still find inspiration in the photos and videos shot by talented people living or visiting here.
Phuket and the Andaman Coast’s landscapes and seascapes really are a photographer’s dream. And now the advent of drone and GoPro cameras has truly widened the horizons and scale of photography and video images, with stunning results.
Here are 7 awe-inspiring drone videos I’ve found that will make you want to pack your bags and fly to Thailand immediately! (and which make me feel extremely blessed to live here…)
1. Flying over Rawai, Phuket | Arial Drone Video in 4k
This video focuses on the Rawai Beach area on the southern end of the island, one of my favourite places in Phuket. The spectacular bird’s eye views include Rawai Beach at sunrise, colourful fishing boats, Nai Harn Beach, sunset at Cape Promthep, and the sea gypsy village. Watch till the end to catch the sunset wedding scene on the hilltop – it made me a bit weepy, I’ll admit!
2. Majestic Thailand (Episode 1)
This video shows sweeping views over Phuket, Krabi, Racha island, the Phi Phi islands and Phang Nga Bay. The background music perfectly enhances the dramatic images of the steep cliffs rising from the sea. All of the highlights of the Andaman coast in one gorgeous two-minute video.
3. Thailand 4K Phuket, Phi Phi Island, Krabi, Tup Island, Maya Bay
Some majestic drone footage over the famous Maya Bay in Phi Phi island and Railay Beach in Krabi, ending with some sunset and beach shots of Phuket. The total Thai tropical holiday dream is here, complete with the ubiquitous girl in a bikini.
4. Ko Phi Phi Islands, Thailand in 4K Drone, Music Video Remixed
Escape through travel works. Almost from the moment I boarded my flight, life in England became meaningless. Seat-belt signs lit up, problems switched off. Broken armrests took precedence over broken hearts. By the time the plane was airborne I’d forgotten England even existed. ― Alex Garland, ‘The Beach’
Ahh, those Phi Phi islands really are a hot spot for those with a yearning to escape. As the setting for The Beach movie starring Leonardo di Caprio, of course it’s now become the place to create dreamy drone video images that make you want to drop out and retreat from the world … forever.
5. Phuket Travel | Thailand 2017 | Drone | GoPro
This drone and GoPro video takes you on a romantic tropical adventure around Phuket. Panoramic scenes of sunsets, hilly landscapes, the Big Buddha and empty beaches are mixed with action shots of travellers motorbiking along trails, swimming in the sea, and frolicking on the beach. And, yes, more girls in bikinis.
6. Similan Islands Highlights
Combining aerial videos shot by a DJI Phantom 3 and underwater footage filmed with an Olympus OMD-EM5 with Nauticam Housing, this video brings you along on a dive trip to the Similan islands. The calm turquoise seas look beautiful from above and in the depths, with the video ending with a flourish as a huge manta ray glides by.
7. Phuket – From The Sky
This creative drone video highlights many beaches and attractions around Phuket. Enjoy all-encompassing views over Phuket Town, Cape Panwa, the Big Buddha, the Naka Weekend Market, and more. A captivating overview of Phuket island life and landscapes.
Important Note! Drone regulations in Thailand
Planning to fly your drone in Thailand? Please note that since late 2017 all drones being used in Thailand must first be registered with the Thai National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission.
