Running Events in Phuket – Fun Run and Marathon Guide 2019

phuket running event

Running in Thailand seems to be a nutty thing to do, with the tropical heat, lack of running trails and roads that are often unfriendly to those travelling by their own two feet.

I made a guide to running events in Phuket in 2018, noting that I’ve managed to avoid running since arriving to the island several years ago.

Things have changed.

After bringing my daughter to some pre-dawn running events for her school’s running club, I finally decided that I should just join in rather than standing around at the finish line in a sleepy stupor, waiting for the kids to run the race.

So, long story short, I’m now a runner. A very slow, ungraceful and reluctant runner, but a runner nonetheless!

And though my face turns into a sweat-drippy beet and my pace is painfully slow and every kilometre feels like a slog, I’m come to enjoy venturing out in the early morning for jogs along the roads near my house – and the occasional beach run.

I’ve joined a handful of 5km runs on Phuket, with the “Run for Give” run on Koh Siray among the most memorable. Running along the streets on this lesser-visited area of Phuket’s east coast, we were treated to a spectacular sunrise view over the bay.

Finding a Phuket running event

As mentioned in my article last year, fun run events in Phuket are sometimes set up as part of a professionally-managed running event, like the Laguna Phuket Marathon, but most are organised as local community events. Races typically have a 10km or 11km category then shorter distance categories of 3km to 6.5km. The runs are not timed, so bring along your Fitbit or similar fitness tracker if you’re keen to record your time.

Most Phuket running events have a low entry fee of 250 to 450 baht including an event T-shirt with funds usually going to support a charity or local community project. Phuket marathons, triathlons and more challenging events for serious runners are considerably more expensive to join, but you’ll get a lot more swag and your run will be timed and recorded.

Many local races are advertised in Thai only, so it can be tough to find out about them if you don’t understand Thai.

We’ve put together a list of upcoming events for 2019 with links to the event organisers wherever possible. We’ll update this page as we find out about more races. (Yes, we’re writing this in April so sorry for not including any runs in January through March – for 2020 we’ll update sooner, promise!)

If you’ve heard about any Phuket running events that don’t appear on this list, please post details about it in the comments below or send an email to lana (@) gophuket.net.
