A Guide to Phuket Fun Runs, Trail Runs and Marathons

Phuket running events were something I avoided like the plague for most of my 20 years living here, but when my daughter joined a running club at her school a few years ago it opened my eyes to another slice of life here.

A sweaty slice of life. A life that involved getting up well before dawn on a Sunday to drive blearily to a gathering spot where hundreds, maybe thousands of people gathered, ready to start a 5km, 10km or marathon-length run in the tropical darkness.

At first, I just drove my daughter to these events and waited for her at the finish line, then, with the encouragement of her teacher (thanks Teacher Lauren!) I decided to join in.

I’ve never been a great runner and getting back into running was a tough slog, especially with Phuket’s tropical heat to contend with. But I’ve come to love it and now look forward to starting my days with an early-morning run around the neighbourhood.

I will never achieve any running glory, but I’m proud of my growing collection of participation medals from the 5km fun runs I’ve joined around Phuket. My personal running goal for 2020 is to make a leap from 5km to 10km runs. I realise this not an amazing achievement, but for my slow, lazy-ass self it’s like summiting Everest!

Where to run in Phuket in 2020

Phuket is host to several running events throughout the year, from 5k/10k community fun runs to internationally recognised runs like the Laguna Phuket Marathon.

Local races around Phuket usually have two distance categories, one from 3km to 5km and a longer run 10km to 11.5km. They are usually – but not always – divided into age and sex categories with the top 5 runners in each category winning a trophy and maybe a bit of prize money. These events are not often timed officially, so be sure to wear a Fitbit or fitness tracker if you want to record your pace and finish time.

Signing up for such events can be done online for some runs, while for others you’ll need to find out where to go to sign up and pick up your bib and T-shirt. It seems that a lot of local running events set up stands at Limelight Mall in Phuket Town in the weeks or days before the event.

The fee to join local running events ranges from about 250 to 700 baht and includes a T-shirt. International events like the Laguna Phuket Marathon are more expensive but it’s professionally managed with official race times and a few days of events to enjoy along with the run.

I’ve tried to include websites or Facebook pages with each event that will provide more information and registration details. Much of the race information is in Thai only.

Phuket running event calendar

I’ll try to update this page throughout the year once I’m able to confirm the dates and details of any more races. Running events in nearby provinces like Krabi and Phang Nga I’ll include as well.

If you know about any more Phuket running events, please post details about it in the comments below or email me at lana (@) gophuket.net.
